We’re all familiar with multiple studies that demonstrate how fish or fish oil, as a regular part of our diet, can reduce the chance of dying from heart disease by one third. Other research studies have linked fish consumption to lowered levels of strokes, depression, Alzheimer’s and many other chronic conditions.

Most recently a December 2009 study reported that consumption of long chain omega 3 fatty acids found primarily in fish and seafood may help prevent colon & rectal cancer.

There are lists of acceptable, endangered and possibly polluted fish. Here is a short list:

OK

Arctic Char Mackerel Sardines

Barramundi Mullett Squid

Pacific Halibut Muscles Trout

Herring Oysters Blue Whiting

Jelly Fish Pollock Haddock

Octopus Sabel Fish Rock Fish

Snapper Stripped Bass

Endangered List

Bluefin Tuna Grouper Tile Fish

Chilean Sea Bass Atlantic Halibut Atlantic Sole

Atlantic Cod Monk Fish Dog Fish

Orange Roughy Flounder Shark

Skate

Sometimes, Depends ( may contain contaminants or involve damage to environment by fishing/farming)

Abalone- if farmed, not poached

Anchovy- best bet from canary in Bay of Biscay

Catfish- best if channel catfish, can be farmed (and hormones added)

Clams- may contian contaminants, check locally

Crabs- again bottom feeder and can be overfished

Lobster- bottom feeder, (toxic contaminants)

Mahi Mahi- Opah, a species of Mahi Mahi can have mercury contaminant

Salmon- When farmed is fed estrogen derivatives to fatten. Organic and wild caught are more favorable to industrial raised

Shrimp- if farmed can have high antibiotic levels

Swordfish- can have very high levels of mercury

Tilapia- raised in Asia, which can be treated with antibiotics, pesticides, carbon monoxide and methyl testosterone

Tuna- canned Albacore can have high levels of mercury, Light tuna is a safer choice

It is known that a proper diet (see previous blogs), exercise, breathing exercises and forgiveness homework begin to shift how we perceive and respond to life. When we see life differently (i.e. not from a place of lack or threat, but as of an abundance of choices) our brains get signals from the heart (see HeartMath Institute), so we literally feel different.

It just involves taking steps in personal responsibility and willingness. The brain will do the rest, i.e. make “Happy Hormones.”

Getting a B.E.S.T. treatment is the first step down that road. What are you waiting for? Call today to begin to feel Happy, Healthy and Successful

Osteoporosis: De-mineralization of the bone resulting in fractures

A) Excess protein consumption- reduce protein to 40 grams a day.

B) Increase green veggies for minerals, vitamins and co-factors.

C) Get active- send a jarring stimulus into the joints and bones by weight bearing activities: walking, running, Pilate’s, aerobics. (studies of professional cyclists is Europe reveal advanced levels of Osteoporosis).

D) Increase oats and rice which are high in silicon to increase bone density.

E) Alka Green, Trace Minerals, Alka Cal and digestive enzymes all increase alkalinity, adding to the alkaline reserve-your internal bank account of vitamins & minerals!

Depression: There are no biologic markers for depression. It’s simply a question/answer based upon subjective assessment.

Consider-

A) Increasing complex carbs (not enough can be decreasing serotonin levels), brown rice, beans, whole grains.

B) Reduce activities that create hormonal, blood sugar and neurologic imbalances i.e. smoking, therapeutic & recreational drugs, stimulants, junk food, excessive video games, social networking, t.v., etc…

C) Get out and get active

D) Ask this simple question and live by it (if you are willing to be well, or is there a secret payoff to being depressed??)

What am I in charge of? Be It, Bring It, Do It.

What am I not in charge of? Let It Go, Let It Go, Let It Go.

You will not die by releasing and accepting life on it’s terms. Acting on life’s feedback allows for self correction. This is a large part of being human. Yet our ego lives in it’s illusion of omnipotence, omniscience and all powerfulness.

Constipation:

A) Take a look at your consumption of certain foods: excess protein, junk food, chocolate and dairy can all shut down the bowel.

B) Increase water, roughage and fiber with fruits and vegetables.

C) Exercise- your choice

D) Make a list of all the “shoulds” you have about yourself, others and life that aren’t going as expected. Rigid, dogmatic thinking that is guilt related is the #1 negative emotion, according to Oriental Health care, for the large bowel.

Practice asking yourself: Who said so? Is this really the objective truth? Love it , embrace it, release it and move on in your heart, mind and body in the journey.

Headaches: Vascular headaches, Tension headaches, Hormonal/Blood Sugar headaches etc. are too much energy in your head. It’s really only personal when you make it so.

A) Cut down on caffeine, sugar, junk food.

B) Get out of your head and into your heart: Sit relaxed, lights out, breathing deeply from the abdomen. As you breath in deeply, notice any tension and/or any thought or emotion that arises: Let it go and focus on your breath. Being this way over time, roots you in the now and frees you from the internal chains that bind, for what is needed will be provided in the now.

In 2008 The National Institute of Health Interview Survey estimated 24.8 million men and 21.1 million women smoke. That’s 20% of the population of our country that is unwilling and unable to choose a healthier lifestyle.

The negative side-effects of choosing to smoke are:

COPD or emphysema

Heart disease

Abdominal aneurysm

Various forms of cancer: lung, bladder, uterus, cervix, esophagus, stomach, mouth and throat to name a few.

A 2010 published study found high cause/effect relationship to smoking and depression.

As with all major addictions (work, sex, gambling, drugs and alcohol) and other compulsive disorders (ADD, Trictotelomania, ODD, etc.) the addiction is a narcissistic means to an end (happiness, safety, security, personal power, identity, value, worth, etc.)

The key is are you willing to look honestly at the facts concerning your health risks and take informed action? If not your habitual choices (vices) can have extreme consequences (death).

I have personally helped many people transform from addict to victor by supporting their system nutritionally, detoxing the body naturally, unlocking unconscious sabotage patterns/perceptions and coaching the client to take charge when the thought or desire to smoke is evoked. The alternative to Health-care, is drugs/surgery and eventually an untimely checkout.

The B- vitamins are a complex group of specific nutrients that are needed as a combination for us to be healthy. Certain groups within the population are extremely vulnerable to B-vitamin deficiencies.

1. People over 65 loose B12, as their digestion decreases with age (think Alka Pan, Super Digest and Food Combining).

2. Vegetarians can miss sources of B12.

3. Smokers and drinkers can become B6 deficient.

Dr. Jane Gorden M.D., Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Georgetown Medical School states ” with all our processed food, up to 60% of Americans have a B-vitamin deficit.” !

Because B-vitamins are water soluble (unlike vitamin A & D that are fat soluble/and stored) b-vitamins must be ingested daily.

There are several causes of B deficiencies, including those already mentioned:

-refined diet

-mental stress (resisting life’s lessons)

-excess physical activity

-therapeutic and recreational drugs

-alcohol

Here’s a short list of what B-vitamins do for us:

-crucial in methylation: process by which DNA and protein are produced and sustained.

-can help lower levels of homo-cysteine, helping heart health.

-neurotransmitter creation: mood balancing.

One might ask “How do I know if I have a B-vitamin deficiency?

Fatigue, memory loss, headache, depression, muscle weakness, cardiovascular and neurological problems, anorexia, weight loss, mental confusion, inflammation, blood pressure (high or low), indigestion, allergies, loose joints, insomnia, nervousness, craving sweets, irritable, noise sensitivity.

Here’s some foods that quickly will bring up B-vitamins if you ingest them daily

Brewers yeast Clams Egg Yolk

Torula Yeast Peanut Butter Lettuce

Sunflower Seeds Beef Cauliflower

Wheat Germ Tuna Fish bect greens

Liver Green Vegetables Mushrooms

Lamb Almonds Brussels Sprouts

Kidney Cheese Milk

Lima Beans Bananas Poultry

Potato Whole Grain

Vegetarians may need to supplement. Standard Process has 2 great products, Cataplex B and Cataplex G for the full B-vitamin spectrum. Alka Green is also great!

Check out the National Institute of Mental Health’s website and you’ll find an astounding fact: 30 million Americans took anti-depressants at a cost of 10 billion dollars in 2009. Pharmaceutical companies overall sales for 2009 included 14.6 billion for psychotropic (mind altering) drugs and $4.8 billion for ADHD drugs.

Here’s some facts-

1). Anti-depressants/psychotropics are only marginally more effective in symptomatic treatment than placebo’s – yet placebo’s do not create serious, multiple side-effects some worse than the original complaint.

2). There are no biochemical markers for stress or depression. The tools MD’s use to diagnose stress, anxiety and depression are based upon symptoms alone.

3). The medical profession is lobbied by the pharmaceutical companies as to what drug is to be used for what symptom.

4). Stress, anxiety and depression are not caused by “chemical imbalances” rather they are an effect of unresolved conflicts and negative thought patterns, repeated over years.

5). Side effects of Anti-depressants- suicidal tendencies, bone loss, lower life expectancies, birth defects, sexual dysfunction, gastric upset, insomnia, nervousness and mental impatience.

How did a country known for it’s self confidence, self reliance and courage become a nation of lack/victim based sheep? Who do not discern and question the never ending commercial drugging of symptomatology, as opposed to solving the conflict through our 6 essential choices and habits?

What we accomplish at our clinic, for those who are willing to face, feel, deal, and release, is true healing from the inside out.

Depression is the most common mental state associated with chronic pain. 30 to 80 % of people with chronic pain are also experiencing depression.

What do we know about chronic pain

- It may include headache, back pain, pain caused by arthritis, neck pain or any body symptom which is associated with inflammation – anything ending in ”itis”

- People may suffer from chronic pain without any identifiable cause like trauma or physical injury/damage

- Chronic pain can have a physical, mental, emotional or chemical cause, yet continues long beyond the point of healing

Major clinical depression includes

-predominant sadness

-blue and hopelessness

-change in weight, appetite, sleep (autonomic hormonal function)

-restlessness and fatigue

-poor concentration and memory

-feeling worthless and guilty

-loss of interest in previous activities

How are chronic pain and depression related?

-each can trigger the other, creating a vicious cycle

-pain triggers sleeplessness, which triggers fatigue and hopelessness etc

DID YOU KNOW?!?!

- B.E.S.T. was studied at Parker Chiropractic College and had a greater than 80% effectiveness in treating chronic pain clients that had failed in medical and chiropractic care

- And almost an equally significant percentage with depression

What can you do today, besides go for a walk or just get outside in the sun?

Call for an evaluation to take charge of your health today and learn how your choices impact your body, health and mental state.

Seriously? It’s not just stress, it’s how I interpret and respond to life! And if I am constantly in a tug of war within myself, others, kids, spouse, friends, traffic, the economy, the government, etc., I’m forever missing the mark. The truth of the matter is, it’s not stress “out there” but an inner resistance within myself to myself- resisting the lesson of the moment.

Between 0 to 7 years old data is input into our brains, some truth based, others inappropriate and outright falsehood. All programmed into our brains, as how to perceive and respond in an appropriate, healthy and life generating response. When trauma occurs in forms of physical, chemical, emotional and mental stimuli, the development of the brain gets stuck in a defense loop and the computer (brain) learns that’s what out there and in here (me) is not safe. So I’m perpetually fighting tigers (perceived illusion of threat) within and without. Here is a short list of how our perceptions effect our bodies.

Brain

-Glucocorticoids during stress reaction damage the hippo-campus interfering with long-term and spatial navigation (posture!)

-Alters nerve cell structure; behavioral consequences, depression.

Breasts

-Feelings/perceptions of social isolation (I feel all alone) can contribute to being 3 times more susceptible to developing breast cancer.

Liver

- Glucocorticoids of stress reaction; lead to inflammation, cancer, blood sugar imbalance.

Bones

-Inflammation creates calcium absorption imbalances and a decrease in osteoblasts (cells that make bone).

Heart

-Post Hurricane Katrina there was a 3 fold increase in heart attacks. Bottled up anger for any reason or justification (it makes no difference) increases risk of heart attack.

Abdomen

-High stress related hormone cortisol increases belly fat, blocked arteries and Type II Diabetes. Various studies at Wake Forest University and U.S. Navy indicate high demand jobs are associated with diarrhea, IBS and other GI disorders.

Sexual Reproductive Health

-As Glucocorticoids go up growth hormone goes down. This creates problems with ovulation, sperm count and sexual activity.

Skin

-Acne, fever-blisters and rosacea (sub-clinical undiagnosed lupus) are all indicators of chronic hypersensitive individuals, creating immune imbalances and skin problems.

So take a deep breath in through your nose and out your mouth, lower your shoulders, remember not to take anything personally and realize that anything outside of your own skin is out of your control, so why stress over it?

What’s Excessive? According to the American Academy of Pediatrics our children should be limited to no more than 1-2 hours a day! Researchers have found that when children watch excessive t.v. they are at risk of depression, obesity and attention span disorders. According to the study, children who reported “more television use had significantly greater odds of developing depression for each additional hour of daily television use.”

These findings were NOT correlated to children who were exposed to video games, computer games or radio. Perhaps because of the involvement of motor skills in games. What I find interesting is how quickly we allow ourselves and children to escape into “fantasy” so quickly and so deeply, when life is present to be lived! Books, music, sports, activities, chores, hobbies, relationships, worship, study (to name a few) are all areas of a balanced individual that get neglected for t.v.

Research shows that exercise between 4-8 pm increases strength and endurance, a great time to exercise, skip t.v. and choose to develop a healthy lifestyle.
