The Minneapolis based non-profit Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) published a recent study. David Wallinga MD, Director of the Food & Health Program, conducted tests on 55 different products that listed HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) as their first or second ingredient, “Overall we found detectable levels of mercury in 17 of 55 samples, or about 31%.”

HFCS is also genetically modified, so it does not trigger an insulin release by the pancreas, as normal sucrose, fructose or glucose does. HFCS goes straight to the liver where it is processed as the chemical that it is, increasing the body’s need to detoxify and HFCS is turned to fat.

Besides the obvious sodas, juices and various drinks, HFCS can show up in many food sources. At our office we define these products as “junk food” : toaster pastries, jams, jellies, sauces, ketchup, canned fruit, cookies, crackers, peanut butter, pasta, bread, energy bars and drinks etc.. Seeing that mercury is a heavy metal and endocrine disruptor (it creates havoc in our hormonal system) it would we wise to read labels and abstain from this product. Much research can be gathered on the Internet by searching for HFCS.

Remember your health is from your choices. Do we really need more research to tell us that mercury is not healthy, or genetic modification is not good for us???

It matters not what we’re taking about, whether it’s an acute infection, a chronic unresolved injury, a metabolic syndrome (cardiovascular-II Diabetes), hormonal imbalances ( thyroid function, Cancer) or auto-immune (Hashimoto’s Disease, Arthritis): Its all about our habits. Our habits create our physiology (Epigenetics-Dr. Bruce Lipton).

Our physiology may be pleasant or unpleasant , yet it is just feedback about our choices and habits. The only true Health care is in willing acceptance of guidance in healthy choices. Here’s two recent examples of the effects of the medical/pain control paradigm.

In a recent study “Acetaminophen use and the risk of asthma”, Beaseley et, al, found an increase use raised the symptoms of asthma, rhino-conjunctivitis and eczema. This study involved 322,000 children from 50 countries. It seems that when we do not address cause, which is always habit, there can be unintended consequences. Notice I said consequences, which implies personal responsibility, as opposed to “side effects” which dwells in the victim/perpetrator paradigm of lower consciousness (see Dr. David Hawkins, Power v. Force).

Another study of Danish women (59,334) compared diet soda drinkers to non-diet soda drinkers during pregnancy. Haldorssion, et al studied the effects of diet soda v. non-diet soda. In my view they are both harmful, with diet soda with Aspartame more damaging (google: symptoms of Aspartame) than refined sugar with HFCS (high fructose corn syrup). There was a 78% greater risk of preterm delivery with women who drank 4 or more diet sodas per day as opposed to 35% greater risk of preterm delivery in women who drank 2-3 sodas per day not sweetened with artificial sweeteners.

It’s obvious that there is a health problem in America. The major diseases of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, auto immune/inflammation and obesity are increasing despite more money, drugs and therapeutics being thrown at the problem to fight it.

Perhaps fighting a symptom or trying to fix it is a form of resistance, which generates more problems.

Maybe we as a nation could choose to embrace the facts (we’re getting sicker each year) and begin to look at cause, one of which is diet.

One area of concern is snacks. If you choose to go with white flour, white rice, high fructose corn syrup, synthetic dyes and preservatives, you’ll continue the cycle of symptoms and disease. I could choose to shop and eat healthy!

Nuts are a great snack for kids and adults. In 1996 the Iowa Women’s Health Study found women who ate nuts 4 to 5 times a week were 40% less likely to die of heart disease. The 2002 Physicians Health Study found that men who consumed 2 or more nut servings a week also had a reduced risk of sudden cardiac death. These studies confirmed studies at Loma Linda University and Harvard School of Public Health.

Most nuts and seeds are rich in fiber, poly-nutrients and antioxidants such as vitamin E, selenium, sterols and omega 3 fatty acids. A one ounce serving will contain 160 to 200 calories with 13 to 20 grams of fat. We need this good fat for hormone production, anti-inflammation, cell wall metabolism, the covering of nerves (myelin sheath) & brain, nutrition for the eyes and fuel involved in ALL aerobic activities (heart rate less than 130 bpm).

Almond milk which does not, in general, create allergic reactions is a good substitute for cow’s milk.

So go pick up sunflower seeds, almonds, Brazil nuts, Pumpkin seeds (insert your personal favorites here) and mix them with raisins and other dried fruits and you have a healthy nutritious, life-giving snack for yourself and family.

Here’s some data from the October 2009 Journal of Pediatrics:

- Numerous studies have suggested that the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders has increased in the U.S. dramatically in the past decades. The early 2000′s found 1 in every 166 have some form of autism, by 2008 it was 1 in every 151, and 2009 saw the ratio drop to 1 in every 99.

- Mercury is a “potent neurological toxin” and a danger to an unborn child’s developing brain, even in low doses of micrograms.

- Mercury is used to produce thousands of products including: High fructose corn syrup, citric acid, sodium benzoate, sweeteners & preservatives to enhance shelf life.

- In 2004 several member states of the European Union reported finding mercury concentrations in beverages, cereals, bakery ware, and sweeteners all which may contain high fructose corn sweeteners.

- Authors estimate that potential average daily total from high fructose corn syrup could be as high as 28.4 micrograms of mercury.

- Other sources of mercury are vaccinations (thiomersol) and dental amalgams.

- There are 20 million diagnosed cases of thyroid conditions nationally, with another 40 million sub-clinically present.

- Mercury is an endocrine disruptor as well, leading to heavy metal toxicity of the hormone system.

For more understanding see the book: “Diagnosis Mercury: Money, politics, and poison” by Jane Hightower, M.D.

Here’s the statistics from The National Cancer Institute Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results.

2009 - 766,130 men, 713,220 women diagnosed with cancer.

What can you do today to reduce risk?

1. Decrease body weight

- Increase veggies, fruits & nuts

- Drink R.O. water

- Aerobic exercise

2. Reduce toxic load

- Cut out sugar, high fructose corn syrup and sweeteners from your diet

- Go Organic with meats – less hormones for your body to deal with

3. Take natural, whole food supplements that support body detoxification, normalization and self revitalization (there’s no power in a drug or surgery to be healthy, ALL health must come from within).

4. Regularly cleanse your body

- Do a series of 10-20 detox foot baths

- Do a liver-bowel-kidney cleanse

5. Detox your thoughts
