1. Eat 3 times a day; if you are eating 6-8 x a day you have a blood sugar/adrenal imbalance that needs to be addressed. By eating 3x a day you will allow time to detoxify and burn fat in between meals.

2. I always recommend making your larger meals at breakfast or lunch, giving your body the nutrition it needs and not skipping meals. If you skip meals your body becomes hormonally imbalanced in favor of sympathetic excess (cortisol, adrenalin etc..) which over time leads to hormone resistant syndromes and eventually a diagnosable disease.

3. Belly breathing through the nose is the best way to keep yourself in Autonomic Balance. When you start to breath through the mouth you tell your brain there’s a threat when there is really no threat. Most Americans are literally addicted to neurologically and hormonally to sympathetic excess; then disease follows. Even during exercise use “breath rights” if you need to keep to nose/belly breathing as a means to not over extend your training intensity. Yes you can go harder, yet in my office and during consultations with athletes, I find that people push themselves harder, getting great performance/fitness results then getting injured. They are fit but not healthy. The sad thing is they repeat this cycle of over training, injury, allopathic symptomatic care and back to over training, never learning the lesson. This corresponds to the Ayurvedic/Chinese principle of 70% -during exercise, meals, etc. Going to 70% capacity and living in moderation allows room for recovery, detoxification and rebuilding.

4. Develop an attitude of gratitude. The most important thing I can impart to anyone, and this is now substantiated by hard data (Functional Magnetic Imaging, Squid Computer), is that our thoughts and the emotions we generate create our biologic terrain, greater than any of our other choices (eat, drink, rest, exercise, breath). Various organs in oriental health care have an affinity and predisposition to various positive and negative emotional states.

For example:

Liver/Gallbladder – (+) happiness (-) anger, rage

Lung/Large Intestine – (+) gratitude (-) guilt, grief

Stomach/Spleen – (+) positive self esteem, contentment (-) low self esteem, exaggerated sense of self, worry

Kidney/Bladder – (+) self control, harmony (-) impatient, fear

Heart/Small Intestine – (+) forgiveness, balance (-) abandonment, rejection, loneliness, paranoia, not feeling

5. Get a body fat measurement; As our waists increases, our incidence of cardiovascular disease, stroke, type II diabetes and chronic disease increases. See steps 1,2 & 3.

6. Get a better nights rest: our bodies have natural cycles of healing. We function best when we do not eat late, which disrupts our detoxification cycle. We also need to be in bed, optimally, by 9:30-10:00 pm. This allows ample time to revitalize and rebuild and not interrupt circadian cycles of detoxification.

As much as you and I might like to, we’re not going to stop our chronological clock. However we can actually reverse our biologic clock through our health choices. Nowhere in our bodies does aging show up quicker and cumulatively than in the largest organ of the body, your skin. It should also be noted that the skin is called the 3rd kidney for its properties of detoxification, when the other systems (liver, lung, bowels) get overloaded. In Oriental philosophy the skin is an indicator on a deeper level for lung and large intestine energy function; especially the emotions of pride, guilt, grief and dogmatically fixed-defensive posturing. As we age skin cells regenerate slower, hormones shift and the body becomes more acidic. We produce less oil and are exposed to UV radiation

Research has shown in a study of 4,000 women, a high correlation between aging skin and dietary habits; i.e. nutritional supplements, H2O, oil, vegetables and fruits.

Here’s a quick list of nutrients in a diet high in fruits, vegetables and oil

- Vitamin C compound: crucial in production of collagen (skin protein) and a powerful antioxidant.

- Ellagic Acid: antioxidant that prevents sun damage and reduces inflammation.

- Polyphenols: antioxidant that protects from free radical damage.

- White Teas: can block enzymes that break down collagen & elastin in the skin causing wrinkles and skin damage.

There is a long list of nutrients but here’s the deal

- 6 portions of vegetables a day

- 4 portions of fruits

- good source of omega fatty acid

- lots of pure water

- flax seed, spinach, dark chocolate, tomatoes, carrots, avocados- you get the idea

Or you can just make a vegetable smoothie, 70% veggies 30% fruits!

In Health & Service,

Potatoes the common potato sources include baked, mashed, scalloped, chips, fries, knishes, pierogies, plus potato water in breads, biscuts, matzo, soups and stews and vodka. Beware that potato is also included in these ingrediants: hydrolyzed vegetable protein, modified vegetable protein (MVP), or modified food starch hidden in packaged meats, cold cuts and seafoods and other processed foods. Sweet potatoes are O.K. (a different family).

Tomatoes and their sauces ( like barbecue and brown sauces), seasonings, condiments like ketchup and steak sauce, prepared meats (like meatloaf), baked beans, gravies, and salad dressings containing them.

Peppers include red, green, orange, yellow, jalapeno, chili, cayenne, curry, pimentos, and paprika. Thes are hidden in salads, cold cuts, pastas, sausage and deli meats, olives, tabasco, worcestershire, steak sauce, coloring on nuts and fish, seasoning mixes, crackers, dips and spreads; black and white pepper are O.K.

“Spices” If the word “spices” or “natural flavorings” appear in the ingredient list, I cannot have it. These are hidden sources and nearly always in commercial salad dressings, mayonnaise, mustard, condiments, sauces, prepared (frozen) entrees, and soups; they could contain paprika, crushed red pepper, ground red pepper, cayenne, chili, curry; All other specified spices are O.K. (like black pepper (again not in the same family), garlic, ginger, basil, rosemary and more).

Also avoid eggplant and tabacco, as well as soy products, since monsanto is genetically modifying 80% of the soy with the petunia gene (a nightshade).

What’s Left?

Flaxseed & olive oils, vegetables, including sweet potatoes (a different botanical family) and many other spices like black pepper (again not in the same family), garlic, ginger, basil, rosemary and more. All fresh unprocessed meats, fowl and seafoods, wines and fruits, nuts, beans, cheeses, grains and herbs are not in the “nightshade family”.
