Gerd, Indigestion, Heart Burn: PPI Dangers

March 22, 2011 By Roland Phillips (D.C.)

Proton Pump Inhibitors like Prevacid, Nexium and Protonix are widely used in this country for a variety of body symptoms.  As a MHS (Morter Health System) member I view symptoms as a wake up call.  A call to change: If a person is in an allopathic – linear mindset, they will view a symptom as needing to be suppressed, that they are being victimized by their body, their food, the heliobacteria etc., all a byproduct of separation and duality.

The wholistic model is quantum; sees the big picture, is unified and seeks to learn the lesson of the moment and move on to the greater lesson.  Here’s some startling facts,  “you get to choose what you want for your life.”

– in 2008 14 billion $’s worth of PPI’s were purchased, second only to statin drugs.

– in a 2009 Journal of Gastroenterology study, prolonged usage of PPI’s actually aggravated the symptoms they were meant to treat.  Which means that continued usage is counter productive.

–  AM.J.M: 2009 study suggest up to 60% of PPI prescriptions for hospitalized clients are unnecessary.

–  in a 12 week trial 22% of 120 healthy subjects taking PPI had Gerd/heartburn while 2% of a placebo group had digestive symptoms (remember primo no nocere).

– since PPI’s affect calcium absorption a 2006 study in JAMA found that long-term PPI usage had a 2.65 times (265%) more likelihood of developing hip fractures.

–  2004/2005 JAMA studies suggest PPI users have nearly 2x the incidence of pneumonia as un-medicated subjects.

The list goes on.  Here’s a suggestion, look at how your emotions and diet affect your digestive system, consider

digestive enzymes and not become a PPI statistic!!
