Are you allergic or sensitive to milk? Or do you have a genetic intolerance to lactose (milk sugar)?
There are a variety of non dairy choices. Last year US retail sales of plant based non dairy beverages such as soy, almond, rice, coconut and hemp milk reached a solid 1.3 billion. Americans are looking for alternatives. There are pro’s and con’s to the substitutes.
Here’s a quick list –
1. Soy Milk
(+) has all the amino acids & high potassium content
(-) An Allergenic to certain people. Phyto-estrogenic-can raise the risk of hormonal imbalance (breast cancer, thyroid function, depression, infertility), along with GI immunity suppression and cognitive changes.
2. Almond Milk
(+) High in vitamin E. Antioxidants for cell wall which means protection against free radicals-think auto immune prevention and improved cognitive brain function. Lower in calories.
(-) Does not have the full amino acids, vitamins and minerals found in whole almonds.
3. Coconut Milk
(+) High in healthy saturated fats. Has antibacterial qualities. Increased energy.
(-) Not a great source of protein.
4. Rice Milk
(+) Hypoallergenic
(-) High in starch-high glycemic index.
5. Hemp Milk
(+) Free of common allergens. Strong source of essential fatty acids. Good source of iron & Magnesium.
